SUSTAINABLE POT LUCK
SPONSORED BY THE VISION GROUP

Bring your favorite vegetarian dish to a potluck supper on Friday, May 16, at 6:00 pm in the dining room of the Parish House.  The film, "The Recyclergy: 33 minutes of Garbage" will follow the supper at 7:00 pm.  Come to either or both events.  A children’s movie will be shown in an adjoining room.

Film: The Recyclergy: 33 minutes of Garbage

 Friday– May 16 18 at 7pm
Sunday, May 18 at 12 noon

For decades the San Francisco Bay Area has been a hub for the recycling movement. Even the garbage companies have a long history of recycling practices. After the first Earth Day celebration in 1970, community, non-profit recycling centers appeared in schools, garages, and neighborhood centers—with the goal of bringing recycling organizations to their cities. By 2006, only two non-profit recycling organizations remained in San Francisco. Despite the lack of surviving community recycling centers, the Bay Area is still home to a unique community.

Bring a friend. Refreshments provided.
“Green” books and other items for sale.

Saturday, May 3—Work Party with Pizza from 9 to 12 noon at the church

Sunday, May 4—Welcome Back Rev. Ann Fox Get Together at 12 noon in the Parish House

Saturday, May 10—Beach Cleaning at 9:00 am at the corners of Church & Main Sts.

The improving weather brings with it the opportunity to spend some time outside cleaning up the messes of winter.  One of those messy spots is our adopted beach at the corner of Church and Main Streets.  Please join us for our first beach cleaning of 2008. Bring your work gloves and a snack if you want one.  We'll provide the rest of the needed resources.  Even if you only have 30 minutes to spare, your help is appreciated.  Contact Bob Rocha, 508-985-4943, for more information.

2008 Minns Lectures

Unitarian Universalism and Class:  A Faith for a Few?
by Mark W. Harris, Minister,
First Parish of Watertown, Unitarian Universalist
and author of the Historical Dictionary of Unitarian Universalism
and of the UUA pamphlet "UU Origins: Our Historic Faith."

He is also an adjunct professor at Andover Newton Theological School and Starr King School.

Lectures are free and open to the public.

Lecture 3:   Universalist Piety and a Classless Heaven

This lecture will examine the Universalist faith and its appeal to a broader number of classes in society through its message of equality.  If all are equal in heaven, then nobody is saved unless everybody is saved.

Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 7:00 pm
King's Chapel Parish House, 64 Beacon St., Boston

Lecture 4:  The Science of Salvation

This lecture will look at the relationship between liberal religion and the eugenics movement. Where did the birth control & euthanasia movements have their origins?

Wednesday, May 7, 2008, 7:00 pm
First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown

Lecture 5:  A Faith for a Few?

How are class differences reflected in our faith today?  Has a faith that emphasizes individual fulfillment prevented us from a building a broader community?  What would an anti-classist UUA look like?

UUA General Assembly, , Fort Lauderdale, Florida

This Mother’s Day
Let’s Honor ALL Our Families
 & Welcome Immigrants

Mother’s Day is a time to honor mothers and families...  but inhumane immigration laws and raids are tearing families apart, separating mothers from their children, creating fear and suffering in our immigrant communities. Join the UUA, UUSC & Arlington Street Church for:

UU Statewide Forum on Immigrant Rights

Saturday, May 10th, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Arlington Street Church, Boston
A Latino Lunch with be included!

Our current immigration system keeps families apart, both through a huge backlog in family-based immigration, and through the unjust detention and deportation of immigrant mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. As people of faith and conscience, our concern for family values means valuing and embracing ALL families.  We hope that you and your congregation can participate.

UU Summer Camps and Conferences

Are you looking for a summer camp for your child?  Or a family camp?  Or a week of adult workshops on a variety of topics?  Three choices of beautiful locations in New England are available for you to enjoy with other Unitarian Universalists:

Ferry Beach Park Association, Saco Maine  www.ferrybeach.org

Rowe Camp, Rowe Massachusetts   www.rowecenter.org

Star Island, Portsmouth, New Hampshire  www.starisland.org

Several children and adults in our congregation have enjoyed wonderful experiences at all three UU camps and would love to talk with you.  Scholarships are available at most camps and there is one just for UU Society of Fairhaven folks at Star Island.  Brochures are available in the Parish House and Harrop Center literature racks.
